Is this breed right for you? We want to set up all of our families for success, so understanding this breed and their needs before you get one is so important.
If you want an independent dog this breed might not be for you, they were specifically bred for companionship. They will be your shadore and require a lot more human attention.
Is this puppy for your kid? Just remember that no matter how much a kid tells you they will look after and care for a dog, you can almost always expect that they won’t (I was that kid). So if you don’t have time for a pup wait until you do.
This breed is more prone to producing more yeast. Not all but a few need a higher quality (more expensive) food. If they don’t do well on regular kibble it can cause ear infections, eye scratches and more expensive issues. (Go to diet section for advice on diet)
They are more prone to overheating, can you ensure that your baby can always be in a good temperature and if they happen to overheat do you know how to cool them off (tips in the frenchie guide).
Can you protect their backs throughout their life? This breeds back is more fragile back due to their structure. Their dwarfism makes them more susceptible to IVDD. The key to a healthy back with this breed is to always protect it from impact like, jumping off of the stairs or furniture.
They eat everything, can you baby proof your home or crate train them to make sure they don’t ingest something that could cause a blockage or get them sick? Inside and outside.
They are like forever toddlers. We breed a calmer sweet temperament which is helpful but this breed is all around notorious for being harder to train (potty train) *training tips in training section. This breed might require more patience.
Are you willing to go to a frenchie vet? All vets are not the same. Going to a vet that isn’t great with this breed could empty your pockets and keep your baby sick.
This breed cannot swim, if you have a pool I would reccomend gating it off or gating a section for your frenchie. They could walk around the pool for years but one day decide to jump in or be clumsy and fall in. Also please educate anyone that babysits them, they need to always have eyes on them.
